How Do You Know If Cleaning Your Solar Panels Actually Worked?
Before-and-after photos look impressive, but they don’t tell you what cleaning did for performance. Here’s what HelioClean measures and reports after every clean.

Many solar panel cleaning companies, including HelioClean, take clear before-and-after photos. The visual difference is often immediate.
But looking clean and performing better are not the same thing. A sparkling panel does not automatically tell you how much extra power the system is producing.
We believe you should be able to measure the difference, not just see it.
Cleaning Is Only Part of the Job
Most solar owners cannot safely inspect their own arrays. That is why we treat every visit as both a clean and a condition check.
Alongside the clean, we look for issues that can affect performance or the life of the system, including:
- Visible cracks or glass damage
- Water build-up
- Stains or residue
- Obstacles on or underneath the structure
- Rust in the frame
- Signs of chemical or abrasive damage from previous cleaning
Photos show the surface. A proper inspection tells you more about the health of the investment.
What We Measure
Knowing the capacity of the system matters. We measure panel output before and after the clean.
Yes, the position of the sun and changing weather affect readings. Comparing yesterday’s generation at the same time of day is not always reliable. To reduce that guesswork, we use an irradiance meter so the reading is based on actual sunlight conditions at the time of measurement, rather than a rough day-to-day comparison.
We also measure panel temperature. Higher-than-normal temperature can point to hot spots caused by bird droppings, sticky residue from dust and pollen, or damage from poor previous cleaning methods.
What We Report
After the visit, you receive a clear report that typically covers:
- Structural or glass observations (scratches, fading, visible cracks)
- Shading or obstacles that may limit generation
- Measured output before and after the clean
- Recommended next service interval
We focus on actual measured gains, not inflated percentages. The numbers should be replicable and easy to understand.
Why Results Vary
Cleaning does not produce a guaranteed percentage improvement. On systems we have cleaned to date, measured gains have typically fallen between 10% and 30%.
Your result may differ. The main factors include:
- How dirty the panels were
- Type of dust
- Bird droppings
- Recent rainfall
- Shading
- Temperature
- Overall system condition
- Irradiance and measurement conditions at the time
That is why we report what we measured on the day, rather than promising a fixed number.
Build a Maintenance History, Not a Once-Off Transaction
A solar system is not a one- to three-year project. Owners invest for many years of returns. Cleaning should form part of a documented maintenance history, not a once-off transaction.
Property managers in particular find this useful. A consistent report across sites makes it easier to track condition, plan service intervals, and compare performance across a portfolio.
